The crew on the Enterprise are on the way to planet Haven, when crew member Deanna Troi gets a visit from Robert's character Wyatt Miller and his parents. He is her future husband in an arranged marriage - a tradition she is not very fond of, especially since she has feelings for another crew member. Deanna meets Wyatt for the first time and he gives her a rose. She gets the impression that she was not what he expected.

Deanna later comes by to chat with Wyatt, she apologizes for her mother's bluntness. Wyatt tells her that he is a medical doctor and she tells him that she's a psychologist. She thought that he would be an artist after noticing drawings that he'd made. The drawings are of a woman and Deanna understands that the reason Wyatt was surprised to see her was that he expected to meet the woman he's painted. He explains that he's seen that face since he was a boy and that he's heard her voice, but he doesn't know who she is.

Wyatt and Deanna are at a party the day before the wedding ceremony, their respective parents are arguing. At dinner, Wyatt has a discussion with the medical staff onboard, as he finds out that an unknown ship is headed for Haven. The parents continue their bickering, so Deanna ultimately yells at them to stop and storms out.

Outside, Deanna has a conversation with Bill, her love on the starship, when Wyatt joins them. Deanna openly talks about her feelings for Bill which Wyatt accepts, but Bill goes back inside. Wyatt then tells Deanna of how her outburst lead to a compromise between the parents. They have a few laughs and he asks her if she really wants to go through with the wedding. After she says yes, he tells her that he's a very lucky man and they kiss.

Later, the crew makes contact with the other ship they've been watching and Deanna sees the woman in Wyatt's drawings. They ask for Wyatt so the Enterprise crew fetches him. The woman is very happy to see him and Wyatt is astonished over how accurate his drawings are. Wyatt goes to Deanna's mother for advice and evidently cannot let the other woman go.

The people on the other ship have an infection so he prepares medical supplies for them and also to go there himself. He says his goodbyes to his parents and Deanna. He then transports himself to the other ship; he finds drawings of himself and also comes face to face with the woman - Ariana - for the first time. Via the ships' communication system he tells his parents that he will try to cure the people and that this was his destiny. Deanna says that she is happy for him.
